"Seven Furlongs"

24x36 Oil on canvas
Price for original work $10,500
Eight fillies explode out of the Keeneland starting gate. This painting is the culmination of thiry-two years of drawing and painting horses. I borrowed the title from a Mexican candidate for President who calls himself "Zorro", meaning the "fox". (His name is Fox.) "YA!" is an expression of excitement or finality. It is also the cry that riders make as they leave the starting gate. I like it because it is a little word with a big punch.

Can you guess who the winner is?

Answer: The three horse "Vivid Sunset", owned by John C. Oxley and trained by John Ward.
Bumped at the start of the race, never the less.

She took over on the first term, lost the advantage to the number two horse, and dug in down the final stretch to win gamely. My kind of filly! YA!
